Google Fixes Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Chromecast Audio Outage – Here’s What You Need to Know
Google Fixes Chromecast – Here’s What You Need to Know
In early March 2025, numerous users of second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices encountered significant issues, rendering their devices inoperative. The problems began around March 9, when users reported receiving “Untrusted device” errors, preventing them from casting content. This disruption was widely attributed to an expired authentication certificate within the affected devices.
Google promptly acknowledged the issue and assured users that a fix was underway. On March 13, the company announced the rollout of an update designed to resolve the problem for most users. They advised users to keep their devices connected to Wi-Fi to receive the update automatically. However, Google cautioned against performing a factory reset during this period, as it could complicate the restoration process.
Despite these warnings, some users attempted factory resets, leading to further complications, including difficulties in reconfiguring their devices. In response, Google released an additional update on March 17, specifically targeting devices that had been factory reset. This update required users to update their Google Home app to the latest version—3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS—to facilitate the reconfiguration of their Chromecast devices.
To ensure your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device functions correctly, verify that it has received the latest firmware update. If issues persist, updating the Google Home app and attempting to reconfigure the device is recommended. Google has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and is committed to restoring full functionality to all affected users.
