Saab’s Long-Term Presence and Future Prospects in Thailand

Last Updated: 5 November 2024By Tags: ,

Saab, the Swedish defense and security company, has had a significant presence in Thailand since the mid-1980s. During this time, Saab has delivered advanced defense systems and established long-term collaborations with Thai authorities and companies.

Historical Background

Saab’s involvement in Thailand began with the delivery of defense equipment such as Carl-Gustaf anti-tank weapons, Giraffe radar, and the RBS70 air defense system. In 2000, Saab established an office in Bangkok, coinciding with Thailand’s plans to modernize its air defense. This led to Thailand ordering six Gripen fighter jets in 2008, followed by another six jets in 2010. The deliveries were completed between 2011 and 2013, with the aircraft stationed at Wing 7 in Surat Thani.

To strengthen its local presence, Saab invested in the Thai company Avia Satcom Co., Ltd., in 2010 by acquiring up to 40% of the shares. Avia Satcom develops and supplies products to the Thai defense forces.

Recent Developments

In September 2024, Saab signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with OptiCept Technologies AB to evaluate a long-term partnership in Thailand. The focus is on industrial cooperation and technology transfer within the food and forestry sectors.

In November 2024, it was announced that Saab and the solar company Midsummer plan to build a mega-factory in Thailand for the production of solar panels. This initiative aims to promote sustainable energy and strengthen Saab’s industrial presence in the region.

Future Prospects

Saab continues to deepen its commitment in Thailand by exploring new collaborations within both defense and civilian sectors. The company’s investments in local partnerships and technology transfers contribute to enhancing Thailand’s industrial capabilities and security. With ongoing and planned projects in renewable energy and advanced technology, Saab positions itself as a key player in Thailand’s efforts towards modernization and sustainable development.
